OUR ISLAND HERE
During my time at the Rauschenberg Residency, located on the island of Captiva, Florida, I was experimenting with language and waterproof paper. I was also considering ideas about tropical pessimism, privatization of the coasts, activism and archipelagic relations. I designed a 20 x 4 floating banner to be viewed from airspace. One of the last days at the residence, along with fellow residents we took a walk in the water in the Gulf of Mexico to activate this sign that reads “YOUR ISLAND HERE”. This choreographic event was fueled by ideas on submarine futures, changes in sea level rising, and a desire to make anti-tourism advertising.
This work is part of the series: not accidentally given: pesimismo tropical (2019)
